Artist Statement

After presenting the news for China’s state broadcaster, I returned to my home town of Cheltenham with an urge to pick up the paint brush again.  This series of paintings (2012-2013) is the result.

Beijing’s pervasive and unrelenting smog is my theme.

Landscapes are my starting point.

And then the smog takes hold.

Each painting evolves, often re-worked with new layers.

The end is never planned.

They are studies in smog  —  Chinese-style.
