Closures continue at deepspaceworks

On this the first day of our summer term, we must announce a further extension to our period of closure.

The initial three week ‘lock-down’ period was extended on Friday 17th April for a further three weeks, which takes us to 8th May. The Foreign secretary, Dominic Raab, said in Friday’s government press release that based on current data it would be “irresponsible” to suggest a date for lifting lock-down, therefore more extensions could be applied.
My search for an official government source of information has been unsuccessful but according to The Guardian, when pressed for a timescale on lifting restrictions, Raab pointed to Boris Johnson’s remark of a month ago, on 19 March, that it would take 12 weeks to “turn the tide” of the virus. “That, broadly, is the outline,” Raab said. The UK is now in its fourth week of lockdown.

In light of this and due to the nature of how we can best operate using shared space, materials and facilities, we will remain closed for at least another six weeks until half term, May 23rd – 31st during which the possible reopening of deepspaceworks in June will be reviewed.

It goes without saying that I hope you are all healthy and finding enough things to do to keep yourselves busy.
I find it helps to be humbled constantly when thinking of the willingness and strength given by all the key workers in our world. And that includes those of you I know personally who are facing daily challenges to provide constant stimulus, kindness and care to family members at home.

Thank goodness the sun is shining!
